Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
