Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
