Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
